- International Student Program
Trinity Lutheran Seminary is authorized by the United States Immigration
and Naturalization Service to accept international students on
an F-1 visa. Each year Trinity welcomes several students from
a variety of countries. In recent years students have come from
Brazil, Czech Republic, Estonia, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Korea,
Liberia, Madagascar, Namibia, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, South
Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.
The international community includes both pastors and laypersons,
most of whom are completing requirements for the Master of Sacred
Theology or Master of Theological Studies degree. There is also
opportunity for international students to take selected course
work on a non-degree, short-term basis. All of these students
are a valued part of the seminary community, contributing a continuing
witness to the global nature of the Christian church.
Life Together
Life Together is the standing organization of Trinity Lutheran
Seminary responsibile for the non-academic aspects of seminary
life. It unites and invites student representatives to plan community
events and address and respond to needs within and outside the
seminary.
The work of Life Together is accomplished through regular monthly
meetings, and through committees created each year in response
to community concerns. Such committees address spouse and family
support, environmental concerns, international students, resident
and commuter concerns, health and wellness, and mission life.
Student officers are elected each September, including the presidents
and vice presidents of the student body and each class. Each president
is a member of the Life Together General Assembly and gives leadership
to community life at Trinity. The vice president of the student
body, the vice presidents of the different classes, and the Pastor
to the Community serve as the Special Needs Committee, which designates
recipients of offerings from the worship services.
Most recent benevolence recipients include:
A children's crisis center in Russia
Needy students at Pacific Islands Bible College on the island
of Guam
Aids mission in Uganda
La Colonia de Solidaridad in Honduras
Music Program
The Seminary Choir and the Liturgical Choir are open to students,
faculty, staff, and their spouses and children. Although the choirs
exist primarily to enhance the worship and musical life of the seminary,
the Seminary Choir also sings in congregations and for special seminary
events. Other vocal and instrumental groups are organized each year
in response to student interest.
Pulpit Supply
Requests are frequently received for seminarians to conduct worship
services in congregations in Ohio and the surrounding area. Students
who have completed the basic courses in preaching and worship are
eligible to accept such assignments. These are made by a student
committee working in consultation with the Pastor to the Community.
Seminary Theater
Trinity Lutheran Seminary Theater is rooted in the inherently dramatic
nature of the Christian gospel. The theater provides members of
the community with direct experiences in the art form of drama,
whether as actors or members of the production crew. The seminary
theater program produces major productions and encourages the production
of shorter plays as well.
Spouse Support Group
Spouses and families are a valuable part of the
Trinity community. Families are invited and encouraged to participate
in daily worship events, to use the library, audit classes, and
use the bookstore. A spouse support group meets regularly for fellowship
and Bible study.
Volunteer Programs
Columbus, a metropolitan area of more than a million people, offers
many opportunities for service on a volunteer basis, as well as
providing positions where remuneration is available.
Students, faculty, and spouses are involved in a variety of voluntary
service agencies in the Columbus area. Recently, persons from Trinity
have served through Habitat for Humanity, Interfaith Hospitality
Network, Greenbriar Food Pantry, Faith Mission, and CHOICES. Participants
are always welcome in these areas of outreach and direct service.
